Young athletes enjoyed a beautiful day playing ball at the Orange County Great Park Sports Park, as 3,000 people gathered for the opening of the final major phase of the 194- acre facility in Irvine.
Built on the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the sports complex is more than twice the size of Disneyland.
The completion of all stadiums and fields within the sports park is a major milestone in the public-private effort to develop the entire 688-acre Orange County Great Park into a metropolitan park rivaling the best in the nation.
The facility is now one of the most extensive sports and recreation complexes in the United States.
The $200 million sports complex and adjacent open space was built and funded by FivePoint (through its partnership Heritage Fields El Toro, LLC) and turned over to the city of Irvine for public use upon its completion.
To celebrate the occasion, an opening ceremony was held at the Championship Baseball Stadium that included speeches and ceremonial first pitches by dignitaries including Irvine Mayor Don Wagner, Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer, and FivePoint Chairman and CEO Emile Haddad.
Star Orange County athletes Amanda Freed, an Olympic gold medal winning softball player, and former L.A. Dodger Shawn Green also took part in the opening ceremonies.
